WHITE FILLINGS
Can you do a white filling?
, is a question often asked by patients. Tooth coloured fillings are placed routinely in front teeth and modern materials maintain colour and polish much longer than some of the older fillings did. Replacement of stained and discoloured front fillings is simple and within reason long lasting. Back teeth can also have white filling placed providing the cavity is not too large. With larger cavities we would recommend tooth coloured inlays or crowns in order to ensure long lasting results.

Do your fillings have mercury in them? This is another commonly asked question. All dental amalgams contain mercury, though this reacts with other metals to form an alloy. There is currently no evidence to suggest that dental amalgam is in the least way detrimental to your health despite some alarmist reporting. Dental amalgam is still the best material for larger fillings in back teeth as it is relatively inexpensive, lasts a long time and has a good track record. All the amalgam we use is pre-proportioned in capsules to ensure complete safety. If you are concerned about amalgam fillings there are alternatives available such as gold or porcelain/composite inlays which provide excellent restorations, though these alternatives are more expensive than amalgam.
